PRIORITIES

This election will help determine how the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District Board of Trustees responds to significant challenges facing public higher education, including the uncertain state and federal funding, the rising cost of living in Alameda County, enrollment and workforce changes, the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence, and attacks on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access to education.

 

Harris Mojadedi has dedicated his career to public education and public service and will continue to provide experienced leadership that keeps our colleges accessible and affordable while remaining true to his promise to always invest and put students first. 

Protecting and Strengthening Public Education

Our educational system is under attack from depraved and morally corrupt policies being rolled out by the federal government. Harris knows that it is crucial to stand up and protect our public educational system so that our community colleges remain inclusive and welcoming places.

  • Community colleges work to serve the whole community, including first-generation students, immigrant students, veterans, lifelong learners, and many others. They provide opportunities for people from all backgrounds and at every stage of life. Harris will continue to be proactive in ensuring that our community colleges serve the full community, not just an elite few.

  • Our immigrant communities should not have to live in fear. Community colleges should be places where people feel safe, that is why Harris will ban ICE from our campuses and be an active voice against their presence in our communities, he will advocate for free immigration legal help on campuses, and will protect students personal records and information.

  • Harris will continue to stand up against discrimination and harassment. He will work to expand resources to help protect low income and historically disadvantaged student communities, provide inclusive mental health and counseling services, and ensure nondiscrimination protections and inclusive workplace policies are up-to-date.

Expanding Access and Affordability for Students

Affordability and the cost of living has skyrocketed across the state and especially in the Bay Area. Students and workers throughout Union City, South Hayward, and Alameda County are struggling with housing, food, transportation, childcare, and other basic costs. Protecting and adequately funding public education must be a priority.

  • Expanding financial aid, providing free meal programs, expanding WiFi access, providing free or discounted public transportation, expanding childcare, and working toward making community college tuition free are just some of the issues that Harris is ready to take on.

  • Find opportunities to build affordable housing by partnering with the state and local governments so that students and faculty can afford to live in the community where they work and learn.

Preparing Students for a Rapidly Changing Economy

Artificial intelligence, automation, and other technological changes are posing a threat to the workplace. Our colleges must ensure that working-class students are beneficiaries of these changes rather than casualties of them.

  • Investing in career education, apprenticeships, transfer pathways and partnerships while ensuring workers have a voice when new technologies affect their jobs is crucial to helping students prepare for the rapid changing economy.

  • AI is the single greatest threat to our democracy and workers and has been used to disproportionately impact communities of color. Harris opposes replacing instructors, faculty, or other campus workers with AI. We need guardrails against AI in every level of government. We must ensure our institutions rein in AI and support students and workers.

Transparency and Accountability

Transparency and accountability are vital. Harris will continue to work to ensure that the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District remains fiscally responsible while prioritizing student success, equity, access, and a strong workforce.

  • Remain committed to giving students the opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions on changes to tuition, programs and anything that affects the colleges. Continue to make all meeting agendas, documents and voting records available in easy accessible formats so that the public stays informed on the actions of the Board.

  • Continue to support independent audits to ensure that funds are being spent responsibly and efficiently and release findings of audits to the public in a timely manner that is easily accessible.
